As we learn more about the healing power of mushrooms for everyday health, different words have become part of our vocabulary. Every day people are learning about the world of Mycotherapy (mushroom therapy).

Turkey Tail is one of the most researched mushrooms in the world and complements cancer therapy in humans.

Per our customer feedback, we’re building the series “7 Important Things to Know to About” to help our community learn more about the all-natural ingredients in our products and why they are used to create our proprietary, synergistic extract blends.

7 Important Things to Know About Turkey Tail

Turkey Tail mushrooms are some of the most popular members of the natural, non-pharmaceutical, anti-cancer mycotherapy group. Turkey Tail is one of the most researched mushrooms in the world and complements cancer therapy in humans. Given their history and popularity, there is often hype about what Turkey Tail mushrooms are, what they aren’t, what they’re called, and how they work. For this part of our series, we look to share a clear picture of Turkey Tail, its benefits, and the reasons for its essential role in our blends.

What Are Turkey Tail mushrooms?

Coriolus (Trametes) Versicolor is a kind of fungi commonly known in the West as Turkey Tail because of its shape and vibrant colors. Turkey Tail is called Yun Zhi in China, and Karawatake in Japan.  This mushroom grows in dead trees in many countries around the world. Turkey Tail mushrooms grow in shelf-like patterns or brackets.

What’s the Big Deal with Turkey Tail?

Extracts from Turkey Tail mushrooms have been shown in different medical trials to have anti-cancer and immune-boosting effects. These extracts were approved in Japan in the 1980s and are currently used as alternative and complementary treatments to immuno-chemotherapy for different kinds of cancers.  In addition, Turkey Tail extract has an immune-boosting effect and has shown to boost the circulatory system.

What Gives Turkey Tail its Power?

Turkey Tail mushrooms yield two important extracts: Polysaccharide-P (PSP) and Polysaccharide – K (PSK).

PSP has shown important results in strengthening the immune system by positively impacting processes and promoting immune cell-count growth. PSK is known commercially as Krestin (patent expired) and is still an essential part of cancer therapy in conjunction with radio/chemotherapy and surgery. PSK is known for both inhibiting tumor growth and for lessening the side effects of chemotherapy. PSK is one of the most used therapies for cancer in Japan and China, approved for medical use by each countries’ version of the FDA.

Does Using Turkey Tail Have Side Effects or Interactions?

Some blackening of the stool and darkened fingernails have been reported, but Turkey Tail has been declared safe for use with humans by many countries, including the US. Although there is little research to support this interaction, we ask and encourage you to seek medical advice about potential interactions before eating Turkey Tail or using blends that contain its extracts.

Are There Different Types of Turkey Tail?

No. Scientists worldwide refer to Turkey Tail as Trametes Versicolor, Coriolus Versicolor, and (less often) as Polyporus Versicolor. Sometimes Turkey Tail is also called PSP and PSK, from the acronyms used to name their powerful extracts.  It’s important to mention that all these names refer to the same fungus and/or its extracts.

“I Found a Mushroom in the Woods. How do I Know That it’s Turkey Tail?”

Turkey Tail is very common throughout the world, but there are a LOT of Turkey Tail look-alikes. A common way to prove that you’ve found or are buying a real Turkey Tail is to look under the cap for small holes or pores. These can be seen by the naked eye.

How Do I Know My Product Has Real Turkey Tail?

Regretfully, some businesses engaged in unethical business practices may try to sell so-called “Turkey Tail” supplements. We encourage our customers and everyone in the Mycotherapy community to research the source of their ingredients before making a purchasing decision.

What is the Best Way to Consume Turkey Tail?

Turkey Tail is edible and can be consumed in any form.  As with any natural supplement, the pure extract yields the strongest results. However, studies have shown that people may obtain the health benefits from Turkey Tail both in extract and powdered form. It all depends on the concentration in the delivery form. We always encourage our customers and everyone in the Mycotherapy community to assess the concentration levels in each product before making a purchasing decision.

Add ViroSafe to your stack for an EXTRA layer of protection

The most important thing to understand about our products and ingredients can be summed up in one word: synergy. It’s true…we strategically selected each of our ingredients for their known health benefits. Each independent ingredient can generate a boost for you. However, the combination of ingredients enhances the potency and efficacy of each individual ingredient, creating synergy! You know the saying, “Two heads are better than one”? In this case, the careful combination of ingredients works exponentially better than the individual ingredient alone.

For this reason, we highly recommend you add ViroSafe Roll-On to your usual mix of Empyrean products. Yes, ViroSafe works great by itself and many of you already love it. But the magic of our products lies in the synergy between ingredients. That’s how you are going to get maximum health benefits!

Go Lucid. Go Beyond. Go Empyrean.
