7 Important Things to Know About Maitake

Maitake mushrooms are some of the most popular members of the natural, non-pharmaceutical, anti-cancer mycotherapy group. As such, there is often hype about what Maitake mushrooms are, what they aren’t, what they’re called, and how they work. For this part of our series, we look to share a clear picture of Maitake, their benefits, and the reasons for their essential role in our blends.

What are Maitake Mushrooms?

Grifola frondosa is a kind of fungi commonly known as Maitake, because of their Japanese name meaning “dancing mushroom”. Maitake grows in the world’s northern forests mostly in the base, stumps, and roots of oak trees. Maitake mushrooms have been eaten in East Asia for centuries and have been researched for its strong medicinal properties. Maitake mushrooms are also known as Sheepshead or Hen-of-the-woods.

What’s the Big Deal with Maitake?

Extract from Maitake mushrooms has been proven as an effective, non-pharmacological aid for many health issues. They help your cells fight cancer, slow the progress of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and type-2 diabetes, and they also boost the immune system.

What Gives Maitake Their Power?

Maitake mushrooms are rich in polysaccharides. Maitake’s polysaccharides have been shown to have different anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, anti-hypertension, and immune-boosting effects. Maitake mushrooms are edible and have become a significant source of natural antioxidants.

Do Maitake Have Side Effects or Interactions?

Maitake may interact with diabetes or hypertension medications. Although there is little research to support this interaction, we ask and encourage you to seek medical advice about potential interactions before eating Maitake or using blends that contain its extracts.

Are There Different Types of Maitake?

No. While Maitake may be called by different names, Grifola frondosa is unique. Maitake is also called Hen-of-the-woods or Sheepshead.

Is Chicken-of-the-Woods a Kind of Maitake?

No. Some people new to mycotherapy may confuse Maitake or Hen-of-the-Woods with a completely different mushroom called Chicken-of-the-Woods.

See the table below for comparison:

Common Name (s) Scientific Name Appearance Uses /Properties

Grifola frondosa Gray-brown ruffles Edible. Medicinal. Anticancer, immune-boosting, antihypertensive, etc.

CHICKEN-of-the-woods Laetiporus sulphureus

Yellow-red levels or “shelves” Edible. Delicacy. Used as vegan substitute for chicken/fish

How Do I Know That My Product Has Real Maitake?

Regretfully, some businesses engaged in unethical business practices may try to sell so-called “Maitake” supplements. We encourage our customers and everyone in the Mycotherapy community to research the source of their ingredients before making a purchasing decision.

Add ViroSafe to your stack for an EXTRA layer of protection

The most important thing to understand about our products and ingredients can be summed up in one word: synergy. It’s true…we strategically selected each of our ingredients for their known health benefits. Each independent ingredient can generate a boost for you. However, the combination of ingredients enhances the potency and efficacy of each individual ingredient, creating synergy! You know the saying, “Two heads are better than one”? In this case, the careful combination of ingredients works exponentially better than the individual ingredient alone.

For this reason, we highly recommend you add ViroSafe Roll-On to your usual mix of Empyrean products. Yes, ViroSafe works great by itself and many of you already love it. But the magic of our products lies in the synergy between ingredients. That’s how you are going to get maximum health benefits!

Go Lucid. Go Beyond. Go Empyrean.
